In 2017, India exported goods worth $ 294 billion. The top exported product from India in 2017 (11.8%) was commodity group 2710 "Petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, other than crude; preparations not elsewhere specified or included, containing by weight 70 % or more of petroleum oils or of oils obtained from bituminous minerals, these oils being the basic constituents of the preparations; waste oils." - the value of exports of this group amounted to $ 34 billion.

Also, structure of Exports from India in 2017 includes the following principal commodities:

  • 8.37% ($ 24 billion) - 7102 - Diamonds, whether or not worked, but not mounted or set.
  • 4.33% ($ 12.7 billion) - 7113 - Articles of jewellery and parts thereof, of precious metal or of metal clad with precious metal.
  • 3.91% ($ 11.5 billion) - 3004 - Medicaments (excluding goods of heading 30.02, 30.05 or 30.06) consisting of mixed or unmixed products for therapeutic or prophylactic uses, put up in measured doses (including those in the form of transdermal administration systems) or in forms or packings for retail sale.
  • 2.4% ($ 7.07 billion) - 1006 - Rice.
  • 2.23% ($ 6.58 billion) - 8703 - Motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than those of heading 87.02), including station wagons and racing cars.
  • 1.59% ($ 4.68 billion) - 0306 - Crustaceans, whether in shell or not, live, fresh, chilled, frozen, dried, salted or in brine; crustaceans, in shell, cooked by steaming or by boiling in water, whether or not chilled, frozen, dried, salted or in brine; flours, meals and pellets of crustaceans, fit for human consumption.
  • 1.5% ($ 4.43 billion) - 8708 - Parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of headings 87.01 to 87.05.
  • 1.33% ($ 3.93 billion) - 0202 - Meat of bovine animals, frozen.
  • 1.17% ($ 3.46 billion) - 8905 - Light-vessels, fire-floats, dredgers, floating cranes and other vessels the navigability of which is subsidiary to their main function; floating docks; floating or submersible drilling or production platforms.

    In 2017, India imported goods worth $ 444 billion. The top imported product to India in 2017 (18.4%) was commodity group 2709 "Petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude." - the value of imports of this category was equal to 82 billion USD.

    Also, structure of Imports to India in 2017 includes the following principal commodities:

  • 8.14% ($ 36 billion) - 7108 - Gold (including gold plated with platinum) unwrought or in semi-manufactured forms, or in powder form.
  • 6.13% ($ 27 billion) - 7102 - Diamonds, whether or not worked, but not mounted or set.
  • 4.52% ($ 20 billion) - 2701 - Coal; briquettes, ovoids and similar solid fuels manufactured from coal.
  • 2.94% ($ 13 billion) - 2711 - Petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons.
  • 2.86% ($ 12.7 billion) - 8517 - Electrical apparatus for line telephony or line telegraphy, including line telephone sets with cordless handsets and telecommunication apparatus for carrier-current line systems or for digital line systems; videophones.
  • 1.99% ($ 8.86 billion) - 8525 - Transmission apparatus for radio-telephony, radio-telegraphy, radio-broadcasting or television, whether or not incorporating reception apparatus or sound recording or reproducing apparatus; television cameras; still image video cameras and other video camera recorders; digital cameras.
  • 1.52% ($ 6.76 billion) - 1511 - Palm oil and its fractions, whether or not refined, but not chemically modified.
  • 1.44% ($ 6.42 billion) - 8471 - Automatic data processing machines and units thereof; magnetic or optical readers, machines for transcribing data onto data media in coded form and machines for processing such data, not elsewhere specified or included.
  • 1.14% ($ 5.07 billion) - 8541 - Diodes, transistors and similar semiconductor devices; photosensitive semiconductor devices, including photovoltaic cells whether or not assembled in modules or made up into panels; light emitting diodes; mounted piezo-electric crystals.
  • The data set presents the structure of imports or exports of goods with the details up to the fourth level of aggregation of the harmonized system for the description and coding of goods HS2012. In total, there are 1,245 commodity groups at the 4th level of the HS2012 classification. Using this set of data it is possible to obtain information about both the general structure of imports into the country (or exports from the country) and the structure of trade flows to / from a single trading partner.
